During my spiritual journey I’ve heard the term “opening the heart” again and again. One friend would tell me I should “open my heart” every time I saw him, and each time, my eyes would glaze over. I had no clue what he was talking about. I’m pretty pragmatic and I don’t do well with esoteric concepts. I had no idea what he was saying — or why I should bother to find out.
The Breakthrough
My breakthrough came during a session with my teacher Kerri Finnecy. I asked her about the state of my singlehood. (Okay, I wailed “Where’s my guy?!” but it amounts to the same thing.) She listened and said that my heart was closed and I should work on opening it.
This again?
“How?” I asked.
She gave me a process… and it led me to some amazing, expansive and… yes, heart-opening experiences.
What Does It Mean To Have An Open Heart?
An open heart is a state of being. When your heart is open, you let love flow through you. You feel open, accepting and expansive.
We all experience it from time to time. It may happen after a good cry, after receiving love from someone else or even after a really great movie.
It feels great — and it’s something you want to feel more often. How would it change your life? What amazing new experiences could you attract with this new, high-flying vibration?
Is Your Heart Open Or Closed?
How does your heart feel? Does it feel constricted or open? Would you describe it as a fist or as an open flower?
11 signs that your heart is closed:
- You judge others harshly.
- You find faults in others.
- You avoid new experiences out of fear.
- You feel paralyzed.
- You feel stuck.
- You’re full of fear and doubt.
- You’re mean.
- You are critical of yourself and others.
- You show little affection to others.
- You are reserved and protected.
- You keep to yourself.
11 signs that your heart is open.
- You have a song in your heart.
- You smile and laugh easily.
- You show affection towards others.
- You love to hug.
- You see the good in people.
- You ignore the “bad” in people.
- You are open to new experiences.
- You accept people just the way they are.
- You show interest in others.
- You are in love with life.
- You attract awesome situations and events into your life.
Doesn’t an open heart sound great? It’s worth exploring, isn’t it?
How To Open Your Heart
The process of opening the heart is simple. It takes just ten minutes in the morning when you wake up and ten minutes at night, before you fall asleep. Within just a few days, you will start to feel a big shift.
The opening of the heart process:
- Lay in bed.
- Close your eyes.
- Think about your heart.
- Try to visualize your heart.
- What do you see? Can you see its shape?
- Is something covering the heart? (It could be anything: an armor, material, a wooden cage…)
As you think about your heart and its covering, tell it:
I see you there.
I feel how you feel.
I love you no matter what.
Now call in some light. Don’t worry about the color. Whatever color shows up is the perfect color.
Imagine this light coming from higher realms. This light is pure, positive energy made of unconditional love. Let the light permeate your heart and whatever is covering it.
Keep telling your heart:
I see you there.
I feel how you feel.
I love you no matter what.
To Make This Process Even More Powerful, Ask For Help:
We all have spirit guides and Arc Angels who are always present and eager to help us if we just ask them. Speak to them. Tell them:
I want to open my heart.
Help me open my heart.
Thank you.
You may feel some buzzing energy as you receive the help you’re seeking but even if you don’t, don’t worry. You’re still getting help.
Keep telling your heart:
I see you there.
I feel how you feel.
I love you no matter what.
Soak in that feeling of unconditional love as long as you can, then open your eyes.
Can you feel, just by reading this process, that your heart feels more open?
What Happens When Your Heart Is Open
I can’t predict what will happen to you, but I know that only good things can come from saturating your heart with unconditional love. Four days of doing this this process, something happened to me that made me feel very vulnerable. This vulnerability led to someone rescuing me from a sticky situation, someone who ended up being an incredible teacher who has exposed me to some expansive and heart-opening experiences. This person still teaches me every time I see him how to love unconditionally and how to live with an open heart. No rules. Just love.
Start The Momentum
When you take the first step of opening your heart, you create momentum. What follows is a wonderful flow of events, circumstances, people and experiences that will help you to open your heart even wider. All you have to do is take that first step.
Beautifully written and a very important lesson for everyone. Thank you for sharing and for helping me see the work I need to do.

Hi Merav, Thank you for this, I will try this excersise tonight before going to bed! I have one question: how can you live with an open heart and ignore the bad in people, but still be aware and stay away from people who are actually bad? I really want to have an open heart, and try to see the positive in every situation and every person. But the harsh truth is that there are some very bad people out there (It can even be your own relatives or people that are close to you), I’ve experienced it myself. I find it hard to protect myself with an open heart…
Hey Dutchgirl, I think that if you work on increasing your own vibration, you will be a lot less likely to attract undesired people and situations, because what you attract is a consequences of your vibration (and a few other things but let’s keep it simple for now). I’d listen to a lot of Abraham-Hicks and do some processes to increase my vibration, when your vibration is raised, you don’t have to be defensive and afraid of meeting “bad people”, they just don’t appear in your reality. I know this for a fact from my own experience. Here’s an article that can help:

Thank you, Merav! This is absolutely beautiful and it really works! I use it regularly. I’ve also shared your process with my coaching clients and they, too, find the beauty and usefulness in it. And, it’s creating a better world! Thank you! <3

Hi Merav
My Name is Mpho my heart is now open i can feel the love my heart was dead now is living again thank you for this program
Having dealt with a broken heart a few months ago, I started to feel better again but something was missing, I felt I was restless and I couldnt really be entirely happy. I felt restless and even bitter towards couples and men. I recognised the feeling, as I always experience it after having my heart broken. I call it the dry season as during this time in the past, I have not been able to have any relationship with guys even though if they show their interest in me, something always stops anything happening. I started thinking about why was that and then suddenly it occurred to me. Although I was moving on, my heart was still closed. I had built a wall around my heart so everyone who approached me would be judged and evaluated because I was still afraid. Once I realised my heart was closed and it was the reason I felt bitter, I prayed. I prayed God that he’d help me to let go of the person who hurt me and that I would be able to give and receive love again. I prayed this same thing for a couple of nights and told myself to be brave and suddenly last night my heart felt light again. I knew it had opened up again and as soon as I felt happy I got a message from a guy I had casually been texting some time ago. I believe guys always sense it when you feel great about yourself again. No matter what I am now open to love again and I feel light and happy in my heart. I also no longer feel restless but feel like I have all the time in the world to attract love interest in my life when the time is right.
Merav,
I just found your article on opening your heart. It was wonderfully written and on point. I’m getting ready to teach a workshop entitled “Open, Receive, Grow: Shine Your Inner Light”. I’m hoping to use your article in that workshop. You will be given full credit. Do I have your permission to do that?
Sure Laura, go ahead and good luck with your workshop!
It also helps to be dumb. Dogs.
This was perfect. I was looking for an article that would illustrate what I was writing and there you were.
If you are interested here is what I wrote for my blog. My thanks to you for your article.

Many times we are so focused on solving the next problem, finding the right solution, we miss the beauty of our own life. Think of the wonderful things you’ve experienced. The times when you felt your spirit soar, the times you felt love, the times you felt completely free. Those are the things that make your life beautiful.
While those moments are fleeting a part of them stays with you forever, if you allow yourself to remember them. When your heart is open, they all come back to you. There are a lot of things we have to do every day. We all have responsibilities, no question we have to fulfill them. In many instances we have become a world of tasks, obligations, fights to survive on some level and just getting through the day. I don’t believe that’s what our life is to be. In my heart of hearts I know that we are here to experience the wonder of life, the joy, the beauty that’s definitely there. It is made up of the moments that open our hearts and change us. Those times when we become more than we were before.
I have friends and clients who have come to me who have lists they live by. Every day is a struggle to do everything on that list. A good day for them, is a day they get everything on the list accomplished. A bad day is when they don’t. That’s how they have come to see life.
I remember one cold day in Newport when I was looking for a place to rent with my huge Great Dane and was having trouble finding it. I walked by the ocean in despair. Someone came up to me and asked what was wrong. I told them and they said to me, “Look around you. See all the beauty. That ocean, the sun. Everything is there for you.” They were so right. It shifted the way I was feeling and shortly after that I found a place.
In the worst of days there is beauty all around us. There will always be someone who cares when you think no one does. There will always be another chance no matter how many you have already had. There will be always be something to delight you if you look. There will always be another love.
Your only job is to keep your heart open. I know that seems tough sometimes, but you can do it. An open heart changes your world. The impossible becomes possible. Regret turns into hope. Unexpected and wonderful things happen. Think of a time you did that and how everything turned around. There’s the evidence. Trust your own experience.
To get you started – Remember hearing a song that made you feel alive. Remember dancing or moving that felt like soaring. Remember the rainbow that made you smile. Remember the moment you fell in love and everything was possible. Remember tasting something wonderful.
Remember when you felt invincible. Remember when the day opened before you full of possibilities.
You also have imagination that lets you see things the way you want them to be. It’s a blueprint for the world to send things to you. On bad days let your imagination show you a world that is glorious. Live in that world until it becomes real because it will.
Life is there for you. Love is there for you in all its forms. It is meant just for you. In a world turned cynical, joy still exists. No matter what’s in the news, the world is still a beautiful place and that beauty is meant for you.
I tried doing this and I felt nothing. I’m still numb.
It sometimes takes longer. Spend some time daily focusing on your heart, you will feel a shift eventually. Good luck!
I have searched far, wide and for long a straightforward guide on opening my heart. Many sources recommend meditation and yoga. Others will address it in a roundabout way like: listen to your intuition etc. I like the simplicity and directness of your process. Am starting tonight.
My duty, meantime, is to thank you for the gift of this sharing.
Be blessed.
